Local favorites highlight Americana Concert series March 5 at Springfield Botanical Garden

Local favorites Emily Higgins, Bo Brown and Melinda Mullins will kick off the third season of “Americana & Roots in the Garden” benefit concert series at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 5, 2017, inside the Springfield-Greene County Botanical Center.

Emily Higgins and her best musical friend, Myrtle, will kick off the Americana series along with Bo Brown and Melina Mullins on Sunday, March 3.

The two-hour performance benefits the Kickapoo Edge Prairie, one of five naturalized areas among the 20 themed gardens and 15 special collections in the Springfield Botanical Gardens located in Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park, 2400 S. Scenic Ave., in southwest Springfield. Admission is a donation of $10 for adults.

The trio of singers, guitarists and songwriters are calling their Sunday concert “Planting Notes of Spring” and will be performing original and traditional songs celebrating nature and gardening.

Proceeds will be used to create a paved trail through the Kickapoo Edge Prairie to accommodate walkers, strollers and wheelchairs, said Ric Mayer, chair of the Friends of the Garden group that develops and maintains the prairie garden located east of the Botanical Center.

The fundraiser is sponsored in cooperation with the Friends of the Garden, Springfield Botanical Gardens, Missouri Prairie Foundation and the Springfield-Greene County Park Board.

The Shortleaf Bank will perform at the Springfield Botanical Gardens to help raise Funds for a paved path through the Kickapoo Edge Prairie.

Other concerts in the series include:

  • The Shortleaf Band, traditional Irish-American music, Saturday, June 24, 7:30 p.m. following the Butterfly Festival at the park.
  • Patrick Mureithi, original and traditional acoustic Americana and blues, Sunday, October 22, 3 p.m.
